The day after 9/11 I had to go back to work. At the time, I was working at a sing-a-long- piano bar. I couldn't believe we had to go back there and sing "Brown Eyed Girl," and "Piano Man." I couldn't believe anyone wanted to go out and hear it either. They did.

I came home that first night, drunk and crying and I wrote this one all at once.

The first night I got the Cds back from the manufacturer I played it for a vet who lost 6 friends in Iraq at a gig in Columbia, MO. It was a couple years later, but he cried too...

Today on the 5th anniversary of 9/11, I am making this song available to everyone for free.

Cannot Turn Away
Washed up an ocean of sorrow today
My feet are still dry but I feel the spray
And on this new shoreline I watch the ballet
I cannot close my eyes , I cannot turn away

My feet in the sand and a voice from the brine
Saying “Don’t be afraid boy, the water is fine
When destiny calls you don’t question design
Fall into the foam and fall into line.”

Here on the beach is another voice too â–³ telling me,
“We’ve got to think this thing through
Live in a lie or find out what’s true”
I don’t know what to say, I don’t know what to do

One person saying “an eye for an eye”
Another is telling me “give peace a try”
don’t understand the how or the why
But I don’t want to kill and I don’t want to die

Afraid of the water with nowhere to hide
The beach was so warm I forgot the high tide
You better learn how to swim ‘cause it’s time to decide
The water is deep and the water is wide

In the eye of the storm we had fallen asleep â–³ And dreamt of a shepherd who watches his sheep
I pray that our souls are still ours to keep
The water is cold and the water is deep

Washed up an ocean of sorrow today
I cannot close my eyes
I cannot turn away
